Although the Metropolitan Community Church and the Church of the Beloved Disciple were sometimes viewed as competing ministries within the emerging LGBTQ Christian movement, Perry and Clement maintained a warm personal friendship and shared a commitment to providing spiritual community for lesbian and gay Christians during the formative years of the gay liberation movement.
